Skirmish: Normandy 44 is a turn-based strategy war game that delves into the historic D-Day US landings on Utah Beach in Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944.

It adopts a digital board game style with intricate hex maps and squad-level counters that depict real-world elements such as infantry, tanks, AT guns, RPGs, and Artillery units to shape the battlefield.

The gameplay revolves around dice rolls (d10) to determine outcomes based on unit characteristics like skill level and firepower. The game itself manages complex calculations like Line of Sight, armor defense, suppression effects, and smoke cover, allowing players to concentrate on strategic decision-making and fulfilling scenario objectives.

With an automatic saving system after every unit’s turn, players can enjoy a more relaxed gaming experience without worrying about losing progress.

The AI is uniquely tailored for each map, incorporating distinct features like sunken canals and specific objectives found within different terrains or structures.

Offering various player modes including playing solo against AI opponents with adjustable difficulty levels, engaging in local multiplayer matches, hosting or joining online two-player games either publicly or privately, or simply observing AI-controlled battles.

The game employs double-sided counters to represent diverse units like squads, teams, vehicles, and weapons as they engage in skirmishes across various maps with the goal of achieving victory through tactics such as eliminating foes or securing key locations.

One significant mechanic is the morale/suppression/reduction system that simulates battlefield pressures and pinned units, encouraging players to employ infantry strategies effectively.

Scenarios mirror authentic skirmishes from the invasion period such as the intense Utah beach landing, canal confrontations, and urban warfare in concealed hedgerows and towns. To succeed, players must utilize defensive positions wisely and manage action points efficiently to avoid enemy fire.

The game introduces an action points (AP) mechanism that dictates what actions units can perform—be it movement, firing, turning tactics, laying smoke screens, among others.

For added challenge and realism, players have the option to enable a fog of war (FOW) setting that conceals enemy units beyond visual range and a line of sight (LOS) system restricting targeted enemies based on visibility.

Each scenario unfolds over several game turns structured into distinct phases—Start Turn, Reinforcement Phase for new unit arrivals like landing crafts, Action Phase where players alternate their moves strategically, Melee Phase for close combat encounters, Rout Phase where vulnerable units retreat, Recovery Phase for reducing suppression effects and fading smoke cover, with a final End Turn phase to evaluate victory conditions.

Prior to the outset of each scenario, a Setup Phase permits players to reposition units on the map or introduce additional elements for tactical advantage.

An extensive 20+ page online manual provides comprehensive insights into gameplay mechanics and calculations for players seeking detailed information.

Furthermore, downloadable scenario expansions offer immersive new challenges like the initial IAP scenario depicting the US paratroop drop on Ste-Mere-Eglise with an urban battlefield setting. The second IAP scenario shifts focus to La Fiere Bridge—a critical location witnessing intense combat during D-Day over a small bridge crossing the flooded Merderet river.
